Individual Treatment Comparison projects overview

An overview of Individual Treatment Comparisons projects, explaining their purpose, when to run one, and how they are structured.

Updated over 2 weeks ago

Individual Treatment Comparisons (ITC) are a type of Local modelling project. They provide critical work appreciation for prospective hazard reduction treatments. They allow you to assess the change in risk from an individual treatment and view a side-by-side comparison of risk both with and without the treatment. You can also download a statistical comparison of the effectiveness of different treatments for risk reduction.

You can only assess burns of more than 4 hectares.

Application of ITC project results

ITC projects are critical for fire practitioners to develop the most effective treatments or series of treatments before the landscape and fuels are physically modified, ensuring the environment and risk reduction are prioritised.

Scenarios

There are two types of modelling scenarios in an Individual Treatment Comparison (for each Treatment Area):

  • Risk without Treatments (RR). The Risk without Treatments is the baseline run that assesses the fire risk starting on January 1st for the following year with no proposed treatments.

  • Risk with Treatments (RT). The Risk with Treatments assesses the fire risk starting on January 1st for the following year with proposed treatments. The RMP compare the RT run to the RR run.

You can modify the scenario date using the date picker in a run’s settings.

The RMP generates an RR and RT scenario run for each Treatment Area polygon you upload; for example, four polygons will generate eight runs.

Runs

ITC projects have both Fire Behaviour runs and Impact Analysis runs.

Inputs and configurations

Individual Treatment Comparison uses the latest Authorised Statewide Snapshot at the time the project is created, utilised as a reference run for your first Risk without Treatments (RR) run. The RMP uses the reference run as the basis for:

  • Finding which ignitions to use in each run

  • All Phoenix RapidFire inputs and configurations. All subsequent runs within the project will use the same inputs and configurations.

Assets come from RMP defaults, not the reference run. You can find the reference run on the top navigation bar.

Outputs

ITC projects have similar outputs as other modelling projects, with the addition of Treatment Areas. Treatment areas are locations identified for intervention to reduce the risk or impact of bush fires.

For a complete list, see Modelling outputs.

Treatment comparison results

Project outputs are available in an xlsx format for every treatment run. These show the risk in comparison to its baseline run.

Running and managing your project

Different project types have shared tasks and features. For information on how to run and manage your project, see Common tasks and features.
